J. Robert Oppenheimer (22 April 1904-1967) was an American theoretical physicist who was appointed Director of the Los Alamos nuclear weapons development laboratory. By the time the project was underway, Oppenheimer was a world renowned physicists at the University of California at Berkeley and had already been involved in the exploration of atomic weaponry. During the Manhattan Project, he was responsible for the design and research of the atomic bomb.
Oppenheimer was appointed Director by General Groves who, recognizing his brilliance, turned a blind eye to his previous history with Communist causes. Though Oppenheimer disconnected from troubled Communist ties, he remained skeptical of the military's control of nuclear power. Oppenheimer was known for his signature fedora and connection to the Bhagavad Gita, the ancient Hindu scripture. After seeing the successful detonation of an atom bomb at the Trinity Test site, Oppenheimer quoted the text:
"Now I am become Death, the destroyer of worlds."
